After Ohio Issue 1 defeat, state's attention turns to November vote on abortion amendment

With the failure of Issue 1 at the polls on Tuesday, it's time to look forward to how that will impact this November's elections in Ohio.

A big issue will be the constitutional amendment vote that would provide Ohioans access to abortion if approved.

Jessie Hill is a Volunteer Attorney with the ACLU who has advocated for access to abortion.

"I am cautiously optimistic about the constitutional amendment passing in November, obviously it's a different issue and obviously turnout is going to be a very important factor," Hill said.

Elizabeth Marbach is the communications director for Ohio Right to Life and saw Tuesday's result as a wakeup call for people who are opposed to abortion.

"I would just call on every pro-lifer in Ohio to act now. If this election taught us anything, it's that we cannot be apathetic. We have to wake up," Marbach said.

Right now in Ohio, there is a court order holding up what's referred to as the "Heartbeat Bill," which would restrict abortions after about six weeks.

This means abortion is currently legal in the state up until 20 weeks.

If the abortion amendment passes, it would allow abortions to take place in the state of Ohio up until fetal viability.
