The Comics Code Authority (CCA) was created in 1954 by the Comics Magazine Association of America to self-regulate the content of comic books in the United States, in response to public concern over violence and horror imagery. The CCA was a voluntary code, but most distributors would not carry comics without the CCA seal, making it a de facto censor. The code prohibited many things, including depictions of graphic violence, horror, and the use of the words "horror" or "terror" in titles. Over time, the code was revised, allowing for some previously prohibited content like vampires, ghouls, werewolves, and the depiction of drug use if presented as a negative habit. By the 1980s and 1990s, some publishers began to move away from the code, and in the early 2000s, most publishers abandoned the CCA, with the last two publishers, DC and Archie, discontinuing it in 2011, rendering the code defunct.
