New national building code in place. The national construction authority (NCA) is urging developers and contractors to acquaint themselves with the new national building code that came into effect three months ago so as to curb frequent buildings collapse in the country. According to the chief executive officer of the NCA, Engineer Maurice Aketch, the new code came into effect in March this year, replacing the previous one that had been in use since 1968. Addressing the media on the sidelines of a public sensitization forum in Siaya town, Aketch said those undertaking construction and other developments are expected to adhere to the new code that has been updated to take into account the current trends. “There are many good things in it like design, implementation, maintenance and it also on-boards the new way of doing things, climate change, design resilience and flexibility in terms of material requirement” said the CEO who was flanked by members of the NCA board. Oketch said that NCA was committed to enhancing compliance to the new code through capacity building and awareness creation to members of the public and all stakeholders. A member of the board, Florence Nyole said the new code will help curb frequent collapse of buildings as a result of poor workmanship. She said the code empasises the use of professionals in project implementation. “The architect, engineer, quantity surveyor and planner must be in the project you are carrying out as prescribed in the building code” she said adding “When we come to the site, we want to see the engagement of professionals on site.” Nyole said that the authority will ensure the new code is available to the public and all the relevant stakeholders.
