In his ninth labor, Hercules traveled to Themiscyra to obtain the sacred belt of Queen Hippolyta, at the request of Eurystheus’ vain daughter. Diplomacy nearly prevailed, with Hippolyta willing to hand over the belt. But Hera, vengeful, spread lies among the Amazons, provoking a bloody battle. Hippolyta died, and Hercules returned victorious, yet sorrowful. On the way, he saved Princess Hesione from a sea monster — but was betrayed by King Laomedon, who refused the promised reward. Thus, another labor was completed, and a bitter vengeance was sown.
