In the LHC, there are 1232 components responsible for deflecting the protons, but only 8 responsible for accelerating them. Why is there such a big difference? What do we even mean by deflection and acceleration? This #TeachingTuesday video is the first chapter of our Electromagnetic Adventures miniseries. We’ll talk about electromagnetic fields, how to control a beam of electrically charged particles and how to design a particle accelerator like the LHC. As part of the education portfolio of #CERNScienceGateway, the #CERNSolvayEducation programme was launched by CERN jointly with ‪@SolvayGroup‬ for the #STEMeducation of high-schoolers.
