Why are vintage watches so collectible? For many, the appeal lies in the fact that the watches are no longer in production and can increase in value and rarity as time goes by. Even if the watch isn’t considered rare yet, it will at least hold its value well.
Many collectors also appreciate the history behind the watch. Who wore it before it was bought? Was it cherished by the same owner for decades? Does it have all its original parts or even a rare feature set? All of these factors add to the desirability and value of most vintage Omega watches.

While vintage Omega watches stand to fetch a fairly decent price on the secondary market, not all models are worth a fortune. In fact, the Omega catalog is incredibly diverse, boasting examples that command over six figures pre-owned as well as entry-level options for under $1k and everything else in-between.
The brand’s catalog is varied, with countless reference variations available. This fact alone drives the diverse price range between vintage Omega models. Of course, it also complicates the buying and selling process.
Additionally, not all vintage watches follow the same guidelines. For example, while many consider the vintage Seamaster dress watch to be one of the most affordable options within the Omega catalog, the same can’t be said about the vintage Seamaster dive watch, which can easily set you back well over $10k.
The same goes for vintage Omega dress watches. While they are, for the most part, the most affordable options on the pre-owned market, the collection is also home to one of the most expensive Omegas ever sold, a vintage dress watch featuring a tourbillion that fetched over $1.4 million a few years ago at auction.
When it comes to collectability, the Speedmaster holds the title of one of the most desirable vintage Omegas. They almost always command a significant price on the pre-owned Omega market, despite their feature set or the condition of the watch.
Even if you aren’t familiar with the Omega catalog, you’ve probably heard about the Speedmaster collection at some point. It came to market in 1957 with roots as a motorsport watch, complete with a Tachymeter bezel and chronograph movement.
Shortly after coming to market, the Speedmaster earned the coveted title of an official flight-certified watch for NASA, beating out other big name watch brands for the honor. It would also become the first wristwatch worn on the Moon and all six lunar missions that followed, earning it the beloved nickname “Moon Watch.” It’s an integral piece of not just horology, but for humankind’s history as it was present as man took their first steps on the Moon.
This history alone makes the Speedmaster a coveted collector’s item among nearly every watch enthusiast, but its desirability does not stop there. The iconic chronograph is instantly recognizable, featuring the same blueprint as the 1950s model. Despite decades of production and dedication to this core design ethos, the Speedmaster has never appeared outdated and is still just as on-trend as the day it was introduced.
Older Speedmaster watches tend to command the highest price on the market, with those featuring the calibre 321 being among the most desirable. Less than 100,000 examples of this movement exist, and that doesn’t only include the Speedmaster. Other Omega watches featuring a chronograph function produced until 1969 had to share this movement with the Speedmaster collection, making it exceedingly rare. Aside from its scarcity, cal. 321 is also historically significant as it was the same movement powering the first watch worn on the Moon and other early trips to space.
Prices for the Speedmaster featuring the cal. 321 can vary. The most affordable options start at around $10k and can exceed well over six figures, depending on the year produced and condition of the watch. Its impressive history and title as the first watch on the Moon make the Speedmaster one of the most collectible models within the Omega catalog.
