I have a severe mental illness called schizoaffective disorder (bipolar type) that requires me to take several daily medications and supplements to manage my symptoms. These help me with both the schizophrenia aspects (like delusions and hallucinations) and the bipolar aspects of my condition (my hypomania and depression).
My daily regimen includes medications that help with mood stabilization, antipsychotic effects, and managing obsessive-compulsive symptoms. I also take several supplements that support my brain health, help with side effects, and assist with anxiety management.
For situations when I need additional support, I have a few "as needed" medications. These help me handle severe anxiety (especially during air travel), and manage certain physical side effects that can occur from my other medications.
While this might seem like a lot of medications, each one serves an important purpose in keeping me stable and functional. Because I have both schizophrenia and bipolar symptoms to manage, I need more medications than someone who might have just one of these conditions. Everything I take has been carefully chosen by my healthcare team to work together effectively.
