This song, and it's soulful melody, would probably be the most popular candidate for the title "Unofficial Anthem of Puerto Ricans Worldwide!" Of course such a title may never exist: nevertheless the Lamento (which I only heard for the first time in September 2010) seems to be the best known and most widely acknowledged and acclaimed masterpiece of the late great Borincano - Rafael Hernandez Marin (1892 - 1965) - El jibarito Inmortal !

José Feliciano does justice to this great composition with this rendition - released on his 2007 album "José Feliciano Y Amigos." A masterful performance in every sense.

As an "outsider" I yet can identify with the sentiments of, in this particular case, the people who love Puerto Rico as their homeland. Songs of this genre exist among many peoples of the world - this one though happens to have a particularly beautiful lyric and melody. It will never grow old - not even when the yearnings of the jibaritos are fully satisfied, since it will always remain a beautiful song - and no one can ever change that. Also, it eternalizes a part of Puerto Rico's history and culture.
