ABBA Stand Review | Front Lift Motorcycle Stand Comparison | Honda CBR900RR Fireblade Project Bike Stand | Paddock Stand Alternative

In this episode, I look at the different motorcycle stands and decide how I am going to support my Honda CBR900RR Fireblade project bike in the workshop while I am performing servicing and maintenance over winter.

I have had a variety of bike stands over the years, some I still have, some I have let go, they all had their use, but some were more flexible bike stands than others. After a chance encounter with a fellow enthusiast in the street while out on my Fireblade, I found myself the proud owner of the adapters for an ABBA stand that fit my CBR900RR.

Having bought an ABBA motorcycle stand and the ABBA front lift arm I am quite impressed. It is very easy to use once you have gone through the effort of learning how. It supports the bike in the middle using the swingarm bolt.

Each different bike needs a set of adapters to suit the ABBA bike stand sockets, but these are quite cheap and if you want to use it on a lot of bikes you can buy the full set. I suspect that there are some that cover a lot of different bikes.

The front ABBA stand lift arm works well, but if you are going to wield any hammers (e.g. change head bearings) you will need to support the front so the slight springiness in the strap doesn’t affect your percussive efforts! But this is true of all other comparable stands too.

The main superbike stand that I have kept for many years is the ubiquitous rear paddock stand. I have one that has cups to go under the swing arm, and I also bought hooks for bikes fitted with bobbins. I also have a lightweight one that needs setting for the correct width, and isn’t quite as flexible, but great if you are only working on one bike with bobbins fitted.

The motorcycle lift that fitted under the frame rails was great, but only on bikes that had exposed frame rails and didn’t have an exhaust in the way. This turned out to not be as useful, as most of the bikes I get have an exhaust underneath or a fairing that makes the stand difficult to use. As this style of bike lift takes up a lot of floor space in my workshop, I decided to let it go, but if I bought another old Harley that needing some mechanical maintenance, I would definitely miss it.
