Hey there, future globetrotter!

If you're planning to move abroad, get married in a foreign country, or need your UK birth certificate recognised overseas, you'll likely need something called an apostille.

Don't worry if that sounds like legal jargon—in this video, we'll explain how to get your birth certificate apostilled step-by-step.

What is an Apostille?
To make sure you know what an apostille is - think of an apostille as a fancy stamp of approval. It's a certificate issued by the UK government that verifies the authenticity of your birth certificate. Without it, your birth certificate might not be recognised in certain countries.

How to Get Your Birth Certificate Apostilled:

Step One: Get the Right Birth Certificate
Make sure you have the full or long-form birth certificate, not the short one. It should show your parents' details.

Step Two: Check if Your Certificate is Eligible
Your birth certificate must be original and issued by a UK register office, or an official certified replacement copy from the GRO. You cannot use a photocopy.

Step Three: Two Options to Get Your Apostille

Option 1: Apply directly to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). This usually costs around £45 and can take about 4 weeks.

Option 2: Use an apostille service. They handle everything for you, usually costing a bit more but taking just a day or two.

Step Four: Submit Your Application

If you're going the DIY route, follow the instructions on the FCDO website. If you're using an apostille agency service, they'll take care of everything for you.

The cost varies depending on your chosen route and how quickly you need it. Budget around £45 plus shipping costs for the FCDO, and possibly upwards of £100 for a faster service.

PS: The E-apostille service is not available for UK birth certificates.

Additional Considerations:

Translations: If the country you're submitting your birth certificate to doesn't use English, you might need a certified translation of your apostilled certificate.

Expiration: Good news! Apostilles don't have an expiration date, so you won't need to worry about renewing them.

Getting your birth certificate apostilled may seem like a hassle, but it's a crucial step if you need your document recognised abroad.
