This week, we’re joined by Michael—a physical therapist, healer, proud gay Mexican-Chinese man, and, according to his friends, the human embodiment of golden retriever energy.

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Rosarito, Mexico, Michael grew up between two cultures—el otro lado and home. He was the only U.S.-born kid in his school, a Chinese child in a Mexican town, often bullied for looking different. When he moved back to the States at 11, he thought he’d finally find “his people”—but ended up bonding most with other Latinos.

We talk about identity, stereotypes, and growing up feeling boxed in. About being mistaken for a girl on the phone because of his voice. About deepening family bonds after loss—and the moment his sister knew he was gay before he did.

Michael opens up about losing his father before coming out and how watching Love, Simon gave him the courage to finally tell his mom. She didn’t take it well at first—but over time, things began to shift.

We also talk about how he found purpose in helping others—first as the “healer” in RPG games, and later as a real-life physical therapist. He’s even worn a superhero costume at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to cheer up kids.

From identity to grief, from boxes and labels to embracing the full spectrum of who we are, Michael reminds us: no one gets to be you. And sometimes, helping others is how we learn to help ourselves.
