Nico van der Meulen Architects presents the recently completed Blair Atholl House, a lavish contemporary farmhouse in Centurion, South Africa. Designed by Werner van der Meulen, the 750 m² double-storey home embraces openness and natural lighting. Deviating from traditional security measures, the house offers unrestricted views of the countryside. The design, a Form-Follow-Function approach, focuses on practicality, outdoor living, and entertainment.

The concept adheres to estate rules, including pitched roofs and natural materials, resulting in a modern farmhouse with a floating double-pitched slate roof. The northward orientation ensures year-round natural light, while overhangs protect from the sun and maintain winter warmth. The glass-enveloped entrance hall, flanked by symmetrical timber-wrapped garages, sets the transparent tone of the house.

Inside, seamless flow characterizes the open plan spaces, where frameless folding doors erase distinctions between indoors and outdoors. The lanai, with a braai, bar, and seating, extends into the kitchen and family/dining areas. A unique feature is the swimming pool integrated beneath cantilevered floor slabs. The floating roof, supported by glass walls, connects the house to landscaped terraces and the surrounding countryside.

A striking timber staircase and stone-clad wall enhance the interior, organized around a double-volume living space. M Square Lifestyle Design integrates natural materials like timber, steel, stone, concrete, and glass, maintaining architectural integrity. The design conceals the scullery, wine cellar, and guest WC behind shop-fitted components, creating a contemporary and uncluttered interior.

The main bedroom features a private lounge, en suite bathroom, and discreetly screened walk-in dressing room. M Square Lifestyle Design seamlessly blends the interior and exterior, while contemporary furniture from international brands completes the luxurious aesthetic. This harmonious integration allows the family to interact from every space in the home, embodying a perfect blend of modern design, functionality, and natural elements.
