Des Jägers mannigfachen Sorgen,
vergeh'n in Jagd und Lustbarkeit!

im dunklen, grünen Wald!
Dann "Weidmannsheil" für mich und meine Freunde,
auf daß die Büchse sicher knallt.

Es stapft der Fuchs im Dickicht in dem Bogen,
die Hasen springen flüchtig an,
und stattlich kommt der Rehbock angezogen,
halli, hallo! die Jagd fängt an.

Die Hirsche röhr'n im Tannenwald so schaurig,
die Wilkdkatz schnelzt und pfeift vor Wut
der Fink im Nest, der schlägt ja schon so traurig,
er sieht getränkt das Moos mit Blut.

Und ist es nachts, wenn Mond und Sterne flimmern,
da geht der Wildschütz aus auf Raub,
Gefahr und Tod tun ihn gar wenig kümmern,
gespenstisch raschelt es im Laub.
Der Jäger schnell die Büchs' herab, es spielt sich
jetzt ein Drama ab, im dunklen grünen Wald!

Wenn dann im Herbst die Hunde lustig jagen,
das ist die schönste Melodie,
und auch in meinen allerletzten Tagen,
niemals, niemals vergeß' ich sie.

Und bin ich einst als Waidmann heimgegangen,
so grabt mein Grab im tiefen Wald!
Im Jenseits drüben hab' ich mein Verlangen,
daß nur noch dort das Rufhorn schallt.
