Indigenous Dance: Singkíl (Maranao People)
Story: The Singkíl is a regal dance that retells an episode from the Darangen, the Maranao people's pre-Islamic interpretation of the ancient Hindu Indian epic, the Ramayana.
It typically recounts the story of Princess Gandingan (or Sittie Mariam in some interpretations) who is trapped in a forest during an earthquake (or by angry forest spirits).
As trees fall around her, she gracefully steps in and out of the crushing forces, which are symbolized by the rhythmic clapping of crisscrossed bamboo poles.
A loyal slave (maidservant) shields her head with an umbrella, and a valiant Prince Bantugan eventually comes to her rescue, leading her out of the forest chaos.
Meaning: It emphasizes the grace, poise, and elegance of the Maranao princess and the bravery and chivalry of the prince.
Folk Dance: Tinikling (Visayan Region)
Story: The Tinikling is often considered the national dance of the Philippines and draws its story from the movements of a local bird called the tikling.
The dance imitates the attempts of the tikling bird to dodge bamboo traps set by rice farmers. The bird would hop and step between the bamboo stalks to avoid getting caught.
Meaning: It is a display of the dancers' skill, agility, and speed as they step quickly over and between the rapidly clapped bamboo poles, mirroring the quick escape of the bird.

Story: The name means "Fandango with Light." The dance is an adaptation of the Spanish Fandango, but with a unique Filipino element.

Folk Dance: Cariñosa (Visayan Region)
Story: Cariñosa literally means "the loving or affectionate one" in Spanish.
It is a courtship dance that portrays acts of flirtation between a man and a woman. The steps resemble a charming game of hide-and-seek.
The female dancer uses a fan or a handkerchief to hide her face or peek at her partner, emphasizing the romantic and playful nature of the encounter.
Meaning: It is a visual representation of Filipino courtship culture—modest, shy, and sweet.
