STORYLINE:
Clashes erupted in Lima on Saturday when protesters tried to reach an Independence Day parade headed by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte.

The demonstrators were seen using objects as they clashed with officers who deployed tear gas at the protesters.

The protesters had gathered about 800 meters (0.49 miles) from where the parade was taking place.

A group of demonstrators, dressed in black, also carried photographs of some of the victims who were killed during anti-government clashes which first erupted late last year.

Those protests began after then-President Pedro Castillo was impeached and later arrested for trying to dissolve Congress on Dec. 7.

Boluarte, who was then vice president, took over.
