Schynige Platte - Top of Swiss Tradition: It is a famous mountain ridge near Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald regions in the Bernese Highlands. The area is accessible via Schynige Platte railway, which runs from Wilderswil, where connection is made with BOB trains from Interlaken. The railway climbs a height of 1.42 kilometre in 52 mins and reaches a height of 1,967 m at the Schynige Platte station. Southwest of the station is a hotel and mountain restaurant, at a height of 1,983 m. This mountain range consists of 3 peaks. Directly above the station and hotel, and overlooking the valleys of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, is the Geiss summit (2,067 m), the closest summit next to the station. Further north, and overlooking Interlaken and the two great lakes, is the Tuba (2,076 m) summit. The highest summit in the Schynige Platte area is the tower-like Gumihorn peak (2,099 m). Northeast of the station is the Schynige Platte alpine botanical garden, specialising in the display of, and research into, the high altitude flora of Switzerland. A unique attraction displaying over 750 species of plants native to the Swiss Alps growing in their natural communities, which also gives visitors a closer look at the beauty, wealth and secrets of Alpine flora. {The Alpine Garden remains in hibernation during winter and left to the black grouse and mountain hare.}
It is notable for its natural panorama, hiking trails, Alpine garden, Alphorn players, alps-facing hotel, and its mountain railway, one of the highest in Switzerland. Besides, the experience trail with photo point, adventure playground, hot pot and a room with a starry sky offer further summit attractions for guests. In good weather conditions there are views to many surrounding mountains, including the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, and others giants of the Bernese Alps. Also, the town of Interlaken and the two great lakes of Thun and Brienz are visible to the north, 1,500 m lower. A number of short loop trails extend north from the train station, reaching several view points, all within one kilometre from each other.
Schynige Platte Bahn Experience: The Schynige Platte Railway travels from Wilderswil up to the vantage point of Schynige Platte, covering a 7.3-kilometre cogwheel route. Guests visiting the Schynige Platte, located right at the heart of the Jungfrau region, on the historic cog railway instantly feel carried back. A great experience starts right when guests step into the open coaches of the nostalgic cog railway with the wooden benches. And the higher the train climbs, the more breathtaking becomes the mountain view that reveals itself. The variety of natural attractions en route is impressive: forests, Alpine pastures and marvellous views of Lakes Thun and Brienz.
Schynige Platte is positioning itself as Top of Swiss Tradition with the "Nature Cinema" and the alphorn players. Visitors can enjoy a free concert of Alphorn every day at Schynige Platte. Afterwards, they can pose with the instrument in front of the mountain pastures, as if they were professionals themselves.
The idea of building a railway to Schynige Platte was born in 1880. Up to the end of 1913, the trains were run using steam locomotives. From 1914, travellers were riding on the newly purchased electric locomotives, which were extremely modern at the time. All of the trains in operation here are still exclusively the electric locomotives from this pioneering time, and they are now over a hundred years old. The railway system also offers an insight into countless details that have long disappeared elsewhere.
Getting to Schynige Platte: By Car or BOB Railway to Wilderswil. The historic Schynige Platte Railway starts from Wilderswil and runs across the Breitlauenen Alp to the Schynige Platte.
