False Accusations Against Teachers: ‘Light Work, High Pay’
Widespread private tutoring because teachers force it, low entry scores but light work and high pay after graduation… these are the mistaken assumptions about teachers like me.
Recently, amid discussions about teachers’ salaries, the rampant private tutoring and extra classes, and proposals to waive tuition fees for teachers’ children, I’ve noticed many people holding distorted views of the teaching profession. As a teacher myself, I understand there are hidden struggles behind my job that not everyone knows or empathizes with.
Why is it that whenever we talk about the problem of extra tutoring and after-school classes, teachers are always blamed and criticized? Tell me, if 100% of parents refused to send their children to extra classes, what would become of the teachers, the schools, and the tutoring centers? In reality, the demand for extra tutoring is huge from parents and students alike, so even if a classroom teacher doesn’t offer extra lessons, they’ll seek out other teachers’ outside classes. The only question is whether those teachers have earned the trust of parents and students.
Put simply, parents at home can’t even manage to teach one or two children well. Meanwhile, a teacher handles an average class size of 40–50 students, so it’s perfectly normal that some students perform well and others do not. You can’t accuse teachers of lacking dedication or deliberately withholding knowledge to push students into extra classes. Why don’t you look at whether the current curriculum has been sufficiently streamlined, or if the volume of material still far exceeds the time allotted for classroom instruction?
Furthermore, not every teacher wants to set up extra tutoring. For subjects like Math, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and English, students scramble to attend extra classes—but for subjects like Technology, Civic Education, History, and Geography, how many students are actually interested in extra lessons? I, too, am a teacher who has offered extra Math tutoring, even though Math isn’t the subject I officially teach—I only did so because parents trusted me and asked. What’s wrong with that?
Many think a teacher’s job is easy, stress-free, and that their hourly wage is high. But they don’t realize teachers do much more than just classroom teaching. Beyond teaching hours, educators have countless unnamed tasks.
Moreover, a conscientious teacher always seeks new teaching methods and rarely reuses old lesson plans. Every year, they revise their plans, adding fresh content. Lesson planning itself is not simple—the time spent preparing one lesson often exceeds the time spent delivering it in class. In practice, for every hour taught, a teacher spends at least an additional hour preparing. Thus, it’s inaccurate to say that a teacher’s working hours are light.
As for those who criticize teacher quality based on low entrance scores to pedagogy programs, I completely disagree. That may have been somewhat true five years ago, but in recent years, entrance scores for education majors have been very high—on par with fields like Medicine or Information Technology. A low university entrance score doesn’t necessarily mean poor professional skills or competence. And even graduates with top honors aren’t guaranteed to be excellent teachers.
In addition, today’s teachers face immense pressure from students and parents. Any issue involving an educator is scrutinized and harshly condemned by the community. One moment of carelessness, and a teacher’s entire career could be ruined. As a result, many of my colleagues choose to “keep a low profile,” doing the bare minimum rather than passionately embracing their work. They teach just enough to get by and then collect their salary at month’s end to make ends meet.
Therefore, if society doesn’t adopt a fairer perspective of the teaching profession, the ones who will suffer most are the students—the future generation of our country.
