Let’s start with so and such (a)

Such is a determiner; so is an adverb. They often have the same meaning of ‘very’ or ‘to this degree’:

use so + adjective : It is so hot.
and if I throw in a noun there I can’t say it is so hot day
we say it is such a hot day so
use such a + a countable noun but if we want to use days we
use such + plural nouns
these are such hot days or
use such + uncountable nouns
it is such hot weather.

Typical errors

We use such, not so, before a noun, even if there is an adjective before the noun:

hey’re such snobs! They won’t speak to anyone else in the village.

Not: They’re so snobs …

We use such, not so, before a noun phrase with the indefinite article a/an:

This is such a wonderful kitchen!.

We use so, not such, before adverbs:
