Jowo Wati Sangpo, one of the most revered statues in Tibetan Buddhism, holds a unique place in Tibet's history. In 1959, amidst the turmoil of the Chinese occupation and the destruction of thousands of Tibetan monasteries, a group of monks from Dzongkar Choede Monastery carried this sacred statue into exile in India. Ever since, it has resided under the care of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
