A few weeks back I had a huge yearning to play some hack 'n slash games and thus I revisited some old classics from when I was younger. One game that came to mind was Devil May Cry 4. I actually never completed it and this would be the perfect oppertunity to finish it and archive it so that it will not be lost to time.
Devil May Cry 4 received mixed reviews and after finishing it, I can definitely see why. I think the style, combat and characters in DMC 4 are awesome. Even on the original Xbox 360 the game still looks great with amazing cutscenes and epic fights that play out. I actually like the new character Nero that you get to play as and Dante is badass and funny as always. The game does not take itself too seriously and that is a good thing.
The movement is definitely a bit restricted as you traverse narrow halls and alleyways most of the time. Later you also enter a jungle, but this is not that open either. But it offers some good variety in locations and the boss fights are absolutely epic with each a unique gimmick. But halfway through the game you actually shift the perspective to Dante and have to revisit all the areas you have been to with Nero. Now it is very awesome to play as Dante and you get a lot of new weapons and moves to mess around with, but it felt incredibly cheap and rushed that you had to go back to all those familiar areas and also beat the same bosses again and again. It was clear that they either ran out of budget or had to rush the release. In the end I think this game is a good time, but I think both DMC 3 and 5 are way better and I would argue that DMC 4 is probably on the same level of quality as Ninja Theory's entry.
