Ep. 50 THE MOSAIC FOUNTAIN, SPRING FEVER III, & SOME UPDATES!
The Fountain- Part 3. Edges are finished, spouts perfected & bluebirds started! Plus Spring Fever III, the chipmunk gets ears, & my nephew’s owl bonus update!
0:52 I start working on the tile pattern on the edge of the fountain. Following the grid lines drawn, I fill in with my geometric pattern after waiting for the other side to cure. The design uses minimal cutting and alternates blues and greens. YAY! The edges are done!
3:40 I run another test to make sure the water is not too splashy and that it hits the splash tray.
5:11 Apoxie Sculpt is mixed up and shaped into some downspouts at the tray openings. Then I use it to fit the copper pipe into place. While I'm waiting for the Apoxie to cure (for three hours), I try out some different tiles for the top lip on the spill tray and find the Illuminations Plus tiles fit perfectly without cutting! After waiting three hours, I test the little downspouts and find they are perfect! I can't stop looking at it and even test it at night.
7:24 It's the next day, and I trace my fountain shape on some butcher paper and make a rough sketch so I can make some decisions about the design. I decide on two bluebirds and white roses.
8:29 I get to work on Spring Fever III while I contemplate the design options for the fountain. This is such a fun project at this point. I make sure to add more purples than in my other designs.
8:46 Back to the fountain! I work on the top lip of the bin cover. I use the same elements from the edges, but have to simplify the design since it is not as wide. Then I affix the tiles to the top of the tray using thinset.
9:28 Next I give an update on the orange and the chipmunk. I was able to get a little bit done during class time.
10:00 Working from a photo I took of a bluebird, I sketch it onto butcher paper and cut it out to make sure the scale works. After I trace it onto the fountain substrate, I start with the eye and work on the mail bluebird on the left side. I use silicone as my adhesive for this part because it is easier to use with stained glass.
10:58 BONUS: My nephew came over and is working on his owl mosaic! He started it six months ago and has used some glow in the dark tile for the moon and eyes. Now he just needs to grout it.
11:10 I get to work on the female bluebird on the right side. Her blue will be a bit muted compared to the male. I add bits of gray in to mute it down.
That's Putting It Together Ep. 50. Thanks for watching! See you next time!
