Where To Find The Wreck Of The Samtampa - Porthcawl, Wales

Описание к видео Where To Find The Wreck Of The Samtampa - Porthcawl, Wales

The ship the Samtampa ran aground on Sker Point near Porthcawl on 23rd April 1947 and the Mumbles Lifeboat was lost in its heroic rescue attempt.

In this video, we tell the story of this fateful day and walk to Sker Point to find the commemorative plaque and show where to find it amongst the rocks. Sker Point lies just west of Porthcawl on the South Wales coast.

The Samtampa was a liberty ship, these were cargo ships built in the USA during World War II and many took part in the Atlantic convoys.

The loss of the 39 crew of the ship and the 8 volunteer crew of the RNLI Mumbles lifeboat, Edward Prince of Wales made it Wales’ worst civilian maritime disaster.

Most of the shipwreck was broken up and scrapped although if you visit at low tide you can still find many bits of the ship including the remnants of the engine.
