Can dressing of wound after piles, fistula, fissure or any perianal region operation be done at night? Should dressing be covered all the time? Can dressing be continued during hot weather? These are some of the most common concerns of patients who undergo surgery for piles, fissure or fistula. In this video, Surgeon Dr Imtiaz Hussain explains the importance of proper wound care and clarifies common misconceptions about dressing after perianal surgery.
After operations of piles, fissure, fistula or any other perianal condition, wound dressing plays a very crucial role in the healing process. Many patients think that leaving the wound open to air may help, but in reality dressing not only provides protection but also allows proper air exchange because medical dressings are porous in nature. This means the wound remains covered and secure, yet it still breathes.
During the night, patients often ask whether dressing should be removed or reapplied. The answer is simple: dressing should remain in place all the time, including during sleep. It protects the wound from accidental contamination, friction with clothes, and the possibility of infection. At night, when the patient may sweat or change position frequently, the risk of irritation increases. Keeping the dressing on ensures safety and continuous healing.
Another common question is about hot weather. Patients feel that in summer or humid conditions dressing may cause sweating and irritation. However, dressing is still necessary in all seasons, whether it is winter or summer. In hot weather, the only additional precaution is to keep the wound area clean and change dressing regularly, sometimes twice a day if sweating is excessive. This prevents moisture collection and reduces the chances of bacterial growth.
Dr Imtiaz Hussain emphasizes that the wound should always be protected with proper dressing until the healing is complete. Open wound exposure is not advisable in perianal surgeries, because this region is highly sensitive and prone to infections. With correct dressing, hygiene, and sitz baths, recovery becomes smoother and faster.
In this video, you will learn why continuous dressing is essential after piles, fissure or fistula operations, how to maintain hygiene during hot weather, and what precautions to take during the night. The goal is to ensure that patients recover fully without complications, and avoid prolonged discomfort or infection.
Surgeon Dr Imtiaz Hussain also highlights the importance of expert guidance. Many patients delay or mishandle wound care due to misconceptions, which delays their recovery. Therefore, follow medical advice properly and don’t discontinue dressing on your own.
