*Due to the fact I don't keep any live stock other than snails in my bowls, I never need to do much in the way of maintenance other than top off, hence why I've called it a no water change bowl, if you kept fish in it (personally I wouldn't, or there are very few species that you could, please no goldfish!) I've used pea gravel as the base to increase surface are for beneficial bacteria and used recycled soil soil so there shouldn't be an ammonia spike that could potentially melt plants or hurt any hitch hiking snails, now I'm just going to leave it for a few months and see what happens!
