Stromboli has been one of the most consistently active volcanoes for thousands of years, cycling between periods of intense activity and quieter ones. In the summer of 2024, however, Stromboli was particularly restless; the volcano sent signals that large, potentially hazardous eruptions could happen. Amid these warnings, we made our way to the island to understand how the locals live on the very slopes of the volcano and how they deal with this imminent presence of danger. We had heard tales of their beliefs—some seeing the volcano as a supernatural or divine presence. And, sure enough, we arrived just in time to witness a series of powerful eruptions, a display that seemed to affirm the reverence the islanders held for their formidable companion.

But Italy is also home to volcanoes that have unleashed unimaginable catastrophes. From the Greeks to the Romans, countless generations have witnessed their might, creating centuries of history, mythologies, and science around their power.
