Who is actually drawn to statist power?

Most people do not want authority over strangers. They want autonomy, stability, and responsibility over their own lives. They want to mind their own business and be left alone.

But statism requires a very different personality type.

It requires people willing to command others without consent, enforce rules on people they will never meet, and cause harm indirectly while calling it governance. Distance becomes a feature, not a flaw. The farther the consequences, the easier the justification.

History makes this pattern clear. In the Roman Empire, political advancement favored those willing to enforce imperial decrees across vast territories regardless of local harm. In Imperial China, bureaucratic systems rewarded strict obedience to centralized authority, not local judgment or moral discretion. Those most comfortable enforcing power from a distance rose the fastest.

This is not accidental. It is a selection effect.

Statist systems do not just attract certain people. They systematically elevate the ones most willing to rule others without accountability.
