The common kingfisher, also known as the Eurasian kingfisher or river kingfisher, is a fascinating and colorful bird. Here are some interesting facts about this delightful species:

Scientific Name: The common kingfisher's scientific name is Alcedo atthis.

Appearance: This bird is easily recognizable with its vibrant blue and orange plumage. The upper parts are bright blue, while the underparts are a warm orange-red color.

Size: Common kingfishers are small birds, measuring around 16-17 cm (6.3-6.7 inches) in length with a wingspan of about 24-26 cm (9.4-10.2 inches).

Habitat: They are commonly found near slow-moving or still freshwater bodies such as rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes. They prefer habitats with clear water and plenty of fish.

Diet: As their name suggests, kingfishers primarily feed on fish. They have excellent eyesight and can spot their prey from a perch before diving into the water to catch it with their sharp beaks. They also eat aquatic insects and small invertebrates.

Nesting: Kingfishers typically nest in burrows that they excavate in riverbanks or sandy banks. They create a tunnel that can be up to a meter long, ending in a nesting chamber.

Behavior: They are solitary and territorial birds, often seen perching on branches overhanging water. Their flight is rapid and direct, usually close to the water's surface.

Breeding: Common kingfishers breed from March to August. The female lays 5-7 eggs, and both parents take turns incubating them. The chicks fledge after about 3-4 weeks.

Conservation Status: The common kingfisher is listed as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN, but it can be vulnerable to habitat destruction and pollution, which affect their food supply and nesting sites.
