Rick Lazio officially accepted the Republican nomination for New York Senate candidacy on Tuesday.

He will now battle First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Democratic candidate.

Declaring himself the underdog, Congressman Rick Lazio has accepted the New York Republican Party's nomination for Senate.

To the cheers of delegates and supporters today, Rick Lazio promised to take his message of "hope, opportunity and responsibility" across the state.

SOUNDBITE: (English) "You're going to have Rick. Thank you. Thank you so much. You are terrific. You energize me, you excite me. I look forward to going out there and do everything you expect me to do as your candidate for United States Senate. I have to tell you, I know I look a little funny today. I've heard all this talk about pounding the pavement, but this is ridiculous. And I want a rematch. You know, until about a week ago, most of you expected to see another Republican here to accept this honour. A man of strong purpose and over the last several weeks, he's shown he's also a man of great courage. And so to him, today, I'll say, that our thoughts and prayers are with you. Our friend and our colleague, Rudy Guiliani."

Lazio also says he has one advantage that Clinton doesn't have.

He says he can be himself, a New Yorker.

Lazio arrived at the state convention in Buffalo, New York, as a wounded warrior.

He had tripped during a Memorial Day parade and needed eight stitches for a split lip.
