It’s #NationalAvaitionDay and today we’re spotlighting the speed and mechanical ingenuity of English aeronautical engineer and motorcycle/sports car racer Beatrice Shilling.

Shilling was a tinkerer, modifying her machines for speed and optimization. In WWII, spitfire fighter planes had a stalling issue during deep dives. Shilling saw this problem and came up with a simple carburetor insert that regulated the fuel flow and prevented the engines from flooding and stalling!
