The castle has three sections: the Imperial castle (Kaiserburg), few buildings of the Burgraves of Nuremberg (Burggrafenburg), and municipal buildings of Imperial City at the eastern site (Reichsstädtische Bauten). The castle along with the city still standing walls, is considered to be one of Europe's most formidable medieval fortifications.
