Politicians, regulators, and pundits have called out banks' financial reporting as the root of the problem in the 2008–2009 financial crisis and have called for changes. But is the criticism really justified? What changes are necessary? In a recent study, Professor Christian Laux from the Institute for Finance, Banking and Insurance at WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) and his co-authors examine international banks’ disclosures and accounting of losses during the financial crisis. The authors also address the consequences of a regulation that reduces the impact of losses on banks’ required regulatory capital.

Aber ist die Kritik tatsächlich berechtigt? Welche Änderungen sind notwendig? Professor Christian Laux vom Institut für Finance, Banking and Insurance an der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (WU) und seine Koautoren untersuchen in einer Studie die Offenlegung und Bilanzierung von Verlusten internationaler Banken in der Finanzkrise. Ebenso widmen sich die Autoren den Konsequenzen einer Regulierung, die den Einfluss von Verlusten auf das notwendige regulatorische Eigenkapital der Banken reduziert.
