I attended a Bat Mitzvah ceremony of an older woman. The cantor sang one of the most meaningful songs in the Jewish world and in Israel, “Jerusalem of Gold.” This song expresses the deep longing of the Jewish people for Jerusalem, which at that time was under Jordanian rule. In 1967, when the Old City was reunited with the rest of Jerusalem, the song became a symbol of hope, return, and spiritual renewal. Listening to the cantor sing it so close to the Western Wall brought me to tears.
The Western Wall is not just a place of prayer, it is the heart of Jewish memory and identity. For centuries, Jews from every corner of the world have turned their prayers toward this very spot, the last remnant of the Temple in Jerusalem. Standing here connects past and present, tradition and faith, exile and return.
We were at the Israel section of the Wall, where women can also hold a Bat Mitzvah ceremony and where families, men and women together, are able to pray side by side. In this place, the holiness of the Wall embraces everyone equally, and moments like this Bat Mitzvah become part of the long story of the Jewish people and their eternal bond with Jerusalem.
