Hey everyone!
I'm back with another modal transformation - this time, exploring what Beethoven's Ode to Joy theme would sound like in all 7 diatonic modes. I used the classic Edward Hodges harmonization as the basis for this project, and used G as the tonic for each subsequent mode to show how these different scales sound compared to one another - I did not reharmonize to "fit the character" of each mode for this reason, it's just a comparison project.
The biggest issue that came up was what to do with the chromatic pitches. I chose to treat them like scale degrees and adjust them according to the mode in question. For example, in dorian mode, the 7th scale degree is lowered, meaning that the F# would become F♮. But since F♮ was already present in two secondary dominants, I lowered that note once more to Fb, yielding some weird results. I also tried this without adjusting the chromatic chords/notes at all, but it ended up sounding unnatural and out of character.
