Jerry Bergonzi is the master of motivic development and has written over a dozen books and courses on the subject. Chad LB is another player who endorses melodic cells to build jazz vocabulary as well as technique, often stringing several cells together to create longer lines and phrases. Although you certainly should go and buy some of these guys' great educational material, you should also be trying to build your own thesaurus of melodic cells drawn from the tunes you are studying.🎹

You're not really playing the standard/song if you're just creating brand new material over the changes. The melody is what makes the song the song which is why there are so many contrafacts- you must reference the melody often.

Same approach for academic compositions, GCSE, A Level and beyond. Justify every note and permutation you've used for the top marks!

For every new standard that you learn, try to build at least a dozen melodic cells and combine them into longer lines. Jot these ideas down, keeping note of your favourites and build a thesaurus of motifs, as Bergonzi has, and you'll be creating your own language drawn from the tradition.
