Opening session of the International Scientific Conference "Life Sciences Today 2025 - Frontiers in Biomedicine: Infer, Innovate, Impact", 17 - 19 September, 2025.
The Opening Session of Life Sciences Today 2025 set the tone for an inspiring three days of science, innovation, and collaboration. The session began with warm welcome remarks from Professor Dos Sarbassov, General Director of the National Laboratory Astana, who emphasized the significance of the conference in celebrating both the 15th anniversary of the Center for Life Sciences and the 10th anniversary of the National Laboratory Astana. His address highlighted the remarkable journey from fundamental discovery to clinical application, framing the event as a milestone in Kazakhstan’s growing biomedical research landscape.
The opening continued with greetings from distinguished institutional leaders. Ahmad Waqar, President of Nazarbayev University, stressed the importance of international collaboration and innovation in shaping the future of biomedical sciences. Founders of the Center for Life Sciences, Zhaxybay Zhumadilov and Almaz Sharman, reflected on the origins and growth of the Center, expressing pride in its achievements and confidence in its global impact. Their remarks were joined by Professor Rakhmetkazhi Bersimbay, who underscored the role of fundamental biology and genomics in advancing cell biotechnology, and by Professor Yerlan Turuspekov of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, who positioned the Center’s progress within the broader scientific strategy of the country.
The scientific program of the morning then unfolded with a series of visionary talks. Professor Dos Sarbassov delivered a keynote entitled “Celebrating 15 Years of Innovation at the Center for Life Sciences: From Discovery to the Bedside”, reflecting on the Center’s legacy of translational research. Following him, Professor Almaz Sharman, now President of the Academy of Preventive Medicine, presented “Technologies Shaping Quality Longevity”, offering insights into how digital health and biomedical advances can enhance healthy aging.
The session continued with a joint presentation by Professor Yuriy Pya and Dr. Timur Lesbekov of the University Medical Center and the National Scientific Cardiac Surgery Center, respectively. Their talk, “ALEM: Strategic Medical Innovation for Sustainable Healthcare Development”, introduced a bold vision for reshaping Kazakhstan’s healthcare system through cutting-edge medical technologies.
Concluding the session, international guest Professor Bart Loeys from Antwerp University Hospital and Radboud University Medical Center delivered a keynote lecture, “New insights from hereditary aortopathies.” His talk not only enriched the scientific discourse but also underscored the global dimension of the conference, bringing European expertise into dialogue with Kazakhstan’s growing biomedical community.
Together, these speeches marked the Opening Session as both a celebration of past achievements and a launchpad for new collaborations, setting a dynamic and forward-looking agenda for the entire conference.
