This video is my review of the Rocky Patel Sun Grown Maduro. I haven’t had one in a while, but my memories of the ones I had is generally good, so I thought I’d revisit and do a review.

The Sun Grown Maduro is a spin-off of sorts of the Rocky Patel Sun Grown – the company claims the blend is “similar” but the Sun Grown is made in Honduras of primary Honduran tobacco while the Sun Grown Maduro is made in Nicaragua largely from Nicaraguan tobacco. I also mention in the video that the Sun Grown Maduro is similar in blend to the Oliva Master Blends 3 – although the blend is similar, the tobacco is grown on two different company’s farms, and the Master Blends 3 (although it is very dark) is not cured using a Maduro process.

The RP Sun Grown Maduro has been around since 2015, and was the #2 Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado in 2016. While my past experience has been generally good, the five or so I’ve smoked in the past had great flavor but consistently terrible construction. Hence my giving up on it for a few years.

This cigar wins the prize of the many, many (many, many) cigars I’ve smoked in my smoking life – for the longest lasting cigar. I didn’t even ash it the first time until an hour and five minutes, and it turned out to be a 2-1/2 hour stick. I’m generally a Robusto and Toro smoker and to be honest, a 2+ hour Gordo is a bit too much for me.

Draw was excellent, and while there was a bit of canoeing at the start it straightened out on its own and required one touch-up along the way. No hint of unraveling or any other problems.

The flavor profile is wonderful. I mention in the video that it would be an excellent choice for a relatively new smoker who wants a “true Maduro” taste. However, I’d choose a smaller vitola, not a Gordo.

The Rocky Patel line for me is hit-or-miss. It’s a broad line and there a more than a few clunkers. However, there are a handful of good RP sticks and this is definitely one of them. I rated it a 9/10 in the video, definitely worth a try.
