Growing up in Pakistan was a unique experience in itself, especially due to the different games we grew up playing. We all have memories of being street urchins and enjoying our time in the sun with our squads. I feel bad for kids these days as many of them won’t grown up playing these games.
‘Yasu panju haar kabutar doli’. A moment of silence for those who ended up being slapped and bottoms up for those who ended up slapping the victims. The game had no concept at all and it was in the wincing of the victim, after the slap, that pleased us evil kids the most. A look of betrayal and eyes full of unshed tears were a clear sign of success.
Yassu, panju, haar, kabootar, Doli is a traditional game across the subcontinent. The appeal of the game, like so many other classics, lies in its inventiveness and simplicity. The game play is very simple and fun. In physical game, this used to be the cheapest game anyone can play and the best thing about it is that anyone can play anywhere. Up to 5 people can play this game and minimum 2 players are needed to play this game. Same goes with the digital version. Mainly, the game is divided into two rounds. Before each round, five players are randomly assigned one of the five names that make up the title of the game i.e. Yassu, Panju, Haar, Kabutar and Doli.
