CALIFORNIA UNLEASHES OPM

Skate-rockers OPM are California's latest contribution to world music, a louche trio who have left their half-pipes to turn out an album that is a mixture of infectious pop, Hip-hop, reggae, scar and Latin.

Scoring a record deal before they'd even played a gig, singers Shakey Lo and John E. Necro, and guitarist Casper (aka Geoff Turney), are, however, no media trained manufactured band given to spouting bland platitudes.

While many a young group or teen star barely admits to drinking milk, OPM happily told APTN how drugs where a big part of the lives and influenced their music.

Their first single, Heaven Is A Halfpipe, was embraced by US rock radio and the chorus - "If I die before I wake, at least in heaven I can skate.." bounced around the American airwaves last summer.

Now, with a US hit on under their belts, they've undertaken a support tour (with band Everlast) to drum up interest in Europe for their album Menace to Sobriety.

Menace to Society is about personal teenage strifes, adult frustrations, and internal anguish - hardly surprising when the band consists of one highschool drop out (Casper), one nerdy Ivy League band camp kid (Matthew) and one who annoyed his mom by listening to hip-hop and dropped all highschool subjects save art (Necro).

After dedicating his existence to a life of detached indecision, questionable life choices and general overindulgence, John e. Necro took an internship at Island Records in Los Angeles in 1995 and worked his way up to A&R scout.
A subsequent job at a management company for record producers gave him the funds to start his part gallery, part studio, part party joint place between Hollywood and Sunset - MNO. From here he would meet the others, record Menace to Sobriety and sign OPM to Atlantic records.

Guitarist Geoff Turney has been playing in bands since his freshman year in highschool, graduating to clubs around the age of 16. Dedicated to a life in music from his early teens, Turney was anxious to leave school, move out of his folk's house and get on with the business of making things happen. His chief concern was to find a source of income that didn't involve getting " a job" - and being in a band seemed like a better idea than becoming a truck driver.


The album has been largely welcomed by critics for it's mix of musical styles and catchy pop numbers. One magazine calling it a "tribute to controlled substances and smart ass anti-authoritarianism".

Tracks include Rage Against the Coke Machine, about the destruction of an unco-operative Coke machine, Stash Up and Dealerman (self explanatory), and paeans to other forms of minor mischief like binge drinking and graffiti tagging.



Menace to Sobriety is on general release across the USA and Europe.
