This is an intro to drawing tutorial video in which I demo how to create the illusion of space in a basic still life using observational drawing & shading techniques. Observational drawing enables us to figure out how objects relate to each other in size and compare to the whole. We line up the objects (positive space) to see which parts line up in height & width. To draw them accurately, pay attention to the shapes created by the negative space between the objects to figure out how they relate to each other. Also, pay attention to hierarchy & overlapping to make sure the objects that are closer to you are drawn lower on the paper but in front of the objects that are behind them. Once the objects are drawn accurately we then identify the light source & add gradation shading to each object using a range of values from white to black that have smooth transitions. The outline of the objects should become solid when you add the values. This assignment is utilized in my "Intro to Drawing Unit" by my High School Required Art 1 classes as a way to learn how to draw a still life utilizing observational drawing & shading techniques with a pencil.
