Описание к видео MBT-70 vs T-64A TURRET | 152mm APFSDS vs Complex Turret Armour | Armour Penetration Simulation

The simulation presents the MBT-70's APFSDS projectile impacting the turret of the T-64A (1971). The T-64A (1971) featured a new turret with High Hardness Armour (HHA) inserts and a Rolled Homogenous Armour (RHA) backing plate.

The MBT-70 was an American-West German protoype tank developed during the 1960's, featuring many cutting edge features. It was able to fire ATGMs as well as Armour Piercing Fin Stabilised Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) projectiles, with the XM578 projectile being one of the first to feature a tungsten alloy penetrator. The impact velocity at 250m has been approximated based on a muzzle velocity of 1509m/s. While it may have a low aspect ratio and unique teardrop design, it would have been one of the most effective projectiles for ~1970, being roughly comparable to the Chieftain's 120mm L15 APDS and the T-64's 125mm 3BM9 APFSDS, all with ~300mm RHA LoS penetration.

At the impact point, the turret armour has a cut out for the main optic, reducing its thickness. Despite this, the Line of Sight (LoS) thickness is 250mm Cast Homogenous Armour (CHA), 150mm HHA, and 30mm RHA (430mm of steel total). This turret design was to reduce the thickness of the T-64 aluminium filled turret, while still providing exceptional protection. According to some sources, the HHA was quite brittle and there were problems with welds splitting. For the simulation, the brittle HHA has been included but no welds have been modelled as the projectile has lost nearly all its energy before exiting the cast portion, so it is unlikely to cause any weld failures.

The turret design seems particularly complex to produce and assemble, with it being unlikely to provide much benefit over a fully cast turret with equal CHA thickness.
