2. SOUNDBITE (English) Rodney Scott, then-Border Patrol San Diego sector chief:

"We got authorization to replace 14 miles of primary barrier here in San Diego. Primarily, that was the old landing mat fence that was put up by Border Patrol agents and National Guard in the 90s. It was falling down. There were some areas that the fence was only about two or three feet above ground level on the Mexican side just because of erosion over the years. So, what you see behind me is the new border wall for San Diego sector we have just under 11 miles of that completed."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rodney Scott, then-Border Patrol San Diego sector chief:

"I think it shows the goodwill on both sides. A lot of times border security is seen as adversarial and it's really not. Compassion and law and order can go together, and I think they do go together. A lot of the people that live in this community are not smugglers. They have no intention of illegally entering the United States. They just live here. We interact with them on a regular basis. So this is all our community."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Rodney Scott, then-Border Patrol San Diego sector chief:

"It's dramatically improved border security. We talk a lot about immigration but this area and just to my east we used to get three or four drive a day with thousands and thousands of pounds of narcotics, hundreds of pounds of cocaine and meth. We don't get that anymore. It comes through the ports of entry now in 20, 30-pound loads hidden in deeply concealed compartments that take a lot of money to build and develop. The only reason the smugglers are going through all that time and effort is because they no longer have the easy access across and between the ports of entry."

STORYLINE:
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump filled out more of his immigration team Thursday, as he promises mass deportations and border crackdowns.

He said he’s nominating former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott to head U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Scott, a career official, was appointed head of the border agency in January 2020 and enthusiastically embraced then-President Trump’s policies, particularly on building a U.S.-Mexico border wall. He was forced out by the Biden administration.
