This song is also known as 跑马溜溜的山上 (The Galloping Horse Hill). It originated from the Sichuan province in the late 1930s. During the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, a horse race was held on Lunar May 13 every year for a 3-day public holiday. This song, as in most other folk songs from this area, is based on the melody of 溜溜, as in 溜溜调. The two identical characters have no special meaning. Thus, 跑马溜溜的山上 is the same as 跑马的山上.
