What is Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin?

The vapor in all e-cigarettes, e-cigars and vaporizers are produced from e-liquid, and all e-liquid is made from primarily Propylene Glycol (PG) and or Vegetable Glycerin (VG).

PG - Propylene Glycol based e-liquid

Propylene Glycol based e-liquid is the most popular choice for most vapers and an excellent choice for those using e-cigarettes and smaller vaporizers.

100% PG based e-liquids are a thinner consistency and produce less gunk than VG, making it easily absorbed by polyfill and cotton fabric inside cartomizers & wick tanks. It also means that less gunk builds up on the heating element of the vaporizer or e-cig.

PG e-liquid does not affect flavor the e-liquid. It’s tasteless and odorless allowing you to have full flavor from your e-liquid.

Propylene Glycol for vaping also produces a stronger throat hit, similar to tobacco cigarettes.

However, propylene glycol e-liquid has been known to cause allergic reactions in some e-cigarette users.

These can vary from minor reactions, like a tingling sensation in the throat, to irritations on various parts of the body.

VG - Vegetable Glycerin based e-liquid

Have you seen images of vapers blowing billowing clouds of vapor? They are using VG e-liquid or a combination of PG and VG.

Vegetable Glycerin based e-liquid creates the densest clouds of vapor.

100% VG e-liquid is popular in larger vaporizers and box mods because of this cloud-like effect.

VG e-liquid has a sweeter taste which can make flavors difficult to detect and it has less of a throat hit than PG e-liquids.

Vegetable Glycerin for vaping is considerably thicker compared to PG and has a slower absorption rate for wicks and cartomizers. It also tends to gunk up and clog vaporizers, requiring more cleaning.

Some VG vapers complain about phlegm building up in their throat after using vegetable glycerin-based juices.

Because of its thick consistency, VG e-liquids produce significantly more vapor and doesn’t cause allergic reactions or irritations as often as propylene glycol.

Which is better?

The answer is “neither” – you will need both in most cases, to get the best of both worlds. Some prefer vaping 100% VG-only, some 100% PG-only liquids and some prefer a mix.
