This is my first cosplay ever
Unfortunately i did not record all the process.
I'm Nina, cosplayer from tiny little Georgia - not US-
The cosplay culture is pretty new here, trying my best to upgrade my levels of crafting.
In this video i demonstrate the budget cosplay creation. As you can see i don't use worbla and expensive materials. You can craft the costume with cheap materials too, but you need to have a lot of patience and time.
What i used to craft my Arthas:
Foam - not Eva, just a regular foam as i could not find Eva in my country. Of course crafting using Eva is much easier and fun, you can heat it and give it some shapes.
Insulation Foam - liquid foam, very handy. I have cut out the shape of my Frostmourne Replica - sword - from the cardboard, than you need to put some pole on the middle of the sword and cover the both sides with foam. After each side dries, take the carving knife, or you can use a stationery knife, and have fun with carving the sword out of it.
You will need a lot of PVA glue to make the armor strong enough, also PVA helps you to set the shape of it - in case if you don't have heat activating materials - in my case my foam had no reactions to the heat. Just try to set the ready foam costume in preferable position.
What i did here: I have cooked the starch, funny huh? This is the best way to save the money. You just need to boil the flour and water, as soon as it gets sick and creamy. Let it chill for a night and you have a bowl of DIY glue and it's organic, you can work without gloves with you bare hands.
Grab some old newspapers and tear them apart by hands prepare the pieces of the paper and crumple each of them. You will need a lot of paper here. Apply the DIY glue or PVA on the surface of your non EVA foam. No need to cover the whole peace of armor, cover just a small part, we don't want our glue to dry.
Pat a bit your paper in DIY glue dont pat it if you are using PVA apply the paper peace to the surface and put some more glue on the top. Make sure to smooth the paper so there are no bubbles. The rest process is in this video. Let the each layer dry, before applying another one. I have used around 4-5 layers, lost the count, and if you are using the DIY glue, now you need to use PVA too.
PVA is a top coat, 6 layers of PVA should be enough. After all the layers are dry, you can start painting. If you want to sand your costume, use a very light sanding sponge.
When you are on budget, PVA is your primer. Never use the paint that contains acetone. Acetone will destroy your primer and melt.
The best option is Acrylic paint.
This process fits the sword too, but its more complicated, as you need to cover the holes of the spray foam.
To cover those holes:
Mix some pva with a bit of warm water. You will need the napkins or the toilet paper, yep the toilet paper. Tear it apart by bare hands, don't use scissors, we need the random small pieces. Mix the load of paper pieces with the pva and water you have prepared. Mix them together, using the spoon. You need to press the paper and squeeze it until you get the paste, from paper glue and water. This paste will fill the holes.
That's it, you have your own budget way to cosplay
