Mount Helena was a fun Hike, I would have to categorize it as an east to moderate level hike. It did end up raining on myself a bit. Views are very good, looking over the city and national forest lands. Mount Helena has multiple trails you can take 1906 Trail, Prairie Trail, Powerline Trail, Prospect Shafts Trail, Backside Trail, and Hogback Trail. You start off from the Mount Helena City park which is Mount Helena. Mount Helena City Park is one of the largest City Parks in the United States. From the start of Mount Helena City Park I took the 1906 trail to the top connected up to Hogback trail and then to Prospect Shafts trail. If you were to take the others Prairie trail connects up to the 1906 trail once prairie trail ends. Powerline trail is the steepest you can take. Powerline trail will take you to the top of Mount Helena. Backside trail does not take you to the top of Mount Helena. Backside trail takes you around Mount Helena. Hogback trail is on the south side of the mountain and was rather short lived. Prospect Shafts trail is the trail I took coming down the mountain. This is the perfect trail coming down the mountain, along with hogback trail. This vlog gives you a little history of Helena Montana and an idea of what the trails look like. Along with some history of Helena Montana I give some information/history on the trails themselves and why they were named the way they are. That history of the trails dates back to 1904. The trails are a moderate traffic trails although on nice days you could say they are a high traffic trail. High traffic, low traffic or moderate traffic it is still a must do hike. The inclines are not bad at all I would have to say most of it is moderate. At the trailhead there are bathrooms. The trailhead also includes maps of the mountain. The trailhead also has plenty of parking. If you bring your dogs they recommend all dogs to be on leases. On my hike I only saw dogs on the top of the hill. When you are at the top of the hill you get some spectacular views of Helena Montana and the Helena Valley. From there you can see why they call this the big sky country. On the top it is a great place to sit and take in the big sky country views of Helena and Helena valley. The views are mostly to the north if you want to take in Helena valley big sky country. The view to the east is of downtown Helena. You can see some of downtown Helena but hills to obstruct your views. For further information of downtown Helena see my vlog on that. The views to the South and West are of national forest land. These are also spectacular views looking at the dense forest of the national forest land. With the national forest land bordering mount Helena you can take in multiple other trails into that bordering area. So, you have borders of the city and federal lands. They do call this hike the Mount Helena ridge hike. Mount Helena ridge hike didn't seem to me to be fitting. It seemed the only Mount Helena ridge you were on was at the top otherwise not much of a ridge. This recreational trail hike takes you through prairies, dense forest and limestone cliffs. The prairie part of it is mostly on the prairie trail. The dense forest is throughout any trail. The limestone cliffs are once you get mid-way on the hike. The limestone cliffs are also in view from the top. You will also find a lot of wildlife on the trail, deer, elk, coyote, squirrels, and chipmunks. On my hike I saw very few deer, elk, coyote, squirrels, and chipmunks but you do need to look closely. I did come across Devil's kitchen cave scenic outlook. Devil's kitchen is a scenic lookout about half way up. Devil's kitchen is cave in the cliffside must see so make sure you take the 1906 trail. Along with that cave scenic outlook are the limestone cliffs and some rock climbers take up. Rock climbing routes are near the cave. When you get to the top you will see hooks for rock climbing. When coming down prospect shafts trail I did come across a shaft but not in the best shape anymore. Mount Helena is also popular for bicycling and running. On my hike I saw no runners but running up powerline trail is popular. Bicycling is done on all trails so watch out for them. Hygge Traveler thanks you for watching.
