Nov 9, 2016 - Our Portfolio students wowed their families at our first exhibition, a celebration of the learning from their 8 week exploration, “Learning is Delicious,” immersing us in math, history, science, engineering, art, and literature related to the beloved treat, ice cream.

Our exhibition was an ice cream party! Yes - we made our own ice cream with our own hand-made ice cream machines! Yes - we taught our families how to make ice cream machines, how to make ice cream, and how electricity works!

Through concrete, hands-on exploration followed by the formalization of this learning with intellectual and creative depth, we learned many concepts, some typically not introduced until high school (we are 5-9-year-olds). These included simulating and experimenting with changing states of matter using both temperature and pressure, making our own thermometers, running electric circuits, laser cutting, soldering, and role playing with the 19th century innovator Frederic Tudor, who commercialized ice and forever changed how we eat and live. We found that learning is indeed delicious!
