Ep. 99 MORE MOSAIC SKY AROUND THE SUNFLOWERS, plus Starting a new Commission and a Community Project!

I start with the sky around the mosiac sunflowers, laying pieces horizontally even if the space is vertically oriented. The left side and bottom are filled in. I LOVE LOVE LOVE adding the bits of blue to the middle! They are so gorgeous with the yellow and green. Then I carefully add my signature, one sliver of glass at a time, filling in around it with the same color. Then blue glass is added up the right side, nipping each piece to fit.
Next, I stop at Home Depot to purchase 1/2" Birch plywood and have it cut to my specifications. There are two things to keep in mind when purchasing and cutting wood and planning for projects.
BONUS: I show a HOT glass pack of Van Gogh glass from Delphi and demonstrate how easy it is to cut. It is nice for beginner students! Then I go bonkers cutting it all down for my class.
After all the cutting, I get back to the commission and prime the birch plywood with Kilz Primer/Sealer. The edges are sealed as well so they can be easily painted at a later date. Once that is dry, I work on the layout for a new...SUNFLOWER commissioned mosaic! This one is a bit different, with just one flower and a brownish orangish center with a hint of green. I talk a bit about the rule of thirds as an artistic tool for composition.
EXTRA BONUS: Update on my son's 3-D Mosaic Ice Cream! With sprinkles.
Then I tackle a quick turn-around Commemorative Community Mosaic project for The Art Place. I attach the Go Board to a wood support, then cover the seam, Wedi Washers and sides with alkali resistant fiberglass mesh and white thinset mixed with a Mortar Admix. The project measures 6 feet x 1 1/2 feet. After I sleep on it, I go ahead and add more washers to the middle.
Last of all, I work on more of the big, blue, endless sky that never ends. I show how a subtle color bits can help move the viewer's eye around the composition. Next week I will finish the sky. I hope.
