Green Woodhoopoe (Phoeniculus purpureus) Bird Call Video - Red-billed Woodhoopoe Call

The Green Woodhoopoe, scientifically named Phoeniculus purpureus, (Also previously known as the Red-billed Woodhoopoe) is a striking avian resident of the woodlands and savannas in sub-Saharan Africa. They also live in gardens, where this video was taken, but are common throughout the Kruger National Park, and in this video you can hear the bird call of the Green Woodhoopoe, one of the noisiest birds in the whole of the Kruger National Park. You often hear them way before you see them.

Recognised by its vibrant emerald-green plumage and distinctively long, slender bill, this woodhoopoe possesses a captivating appearance. Often found in small, noisy groups, these birds are highly social and engage in cooperative breeding and foraging activities. Their unmistakable calls resonate through the trees as they search for insects, spiders, and small vertebrates. With an agile and acrobatic flight, the Green Woodhoopoe adds a touch of colour and liveliness to the African skies, embodying the beauty of its natural habitat.
