What to Expect When Riding a Motorcycle in Bali?

Expect a whole new dangerous world on the roads. The rules here seem simple. Cut everyone, if there is a gap it's yours, and make U-Turns in the silliest places you can think of that will hold up traffic.

When riding a motorcycle in Bali expect four people on one bike, trucks and buses almost running you over, hundreds of motorcycles around you, and people running red lights and not moving for emergency vehicles.

Tourists come to Bali and expect they can start riding a motorcycle. It is easy for anyone to hire a motorcycle. But, if you don't have a license or experience and riding a motorcycle accident is a great way to end your holiday fast.


I love riding my motorbike here and I ride daily. I see the weird, cool, dangerous, and interesting things that I curse and often just shake my head. Besides the crazy (fun) traffic, Bali Roads lead to many beautiful beaches, waterfalls, and temples. As dangerous as it may seem, motorbike riding here in Bali is fun and really the only way to quickly get around.
