What is the difference between religiosity and spirituality? And what to think about the growing number of non-religious people who, nevertheless, hold spiritual beliefs and have a flourishing spiritual life? This questions are deeply related to the process of secularization of modern cultures, a process that involves a new (the modern) perspective about freedom of conscience, speech, belief and cult; religious freedom, to be more concise. In brief considerations about the historical development of the concept of freedom, which is usually reduced to the mere political dimension of it, we will try to address the implications of such concept to our moral and spiritual life.

Humberto Schubert is a lecturer in Philosophy, currently visiting academic in the University of Oxford. He is also a volunteer in the Spiritist Society Primavera, Brazil, editor of the Primavera Spiritualist Press and author of books and articles on Spiritism, Theology and Philosophy.
